چکیده

For a further understanding of the phase transitions mechanism in type-I silicon clathrates K₈Si46, ab initio self-consistent electronic calculations combined with linear-response method have been performed to investigate the vibrational properties of alkali metal K atoms encapsulated type-I silicon-clathrate under pressure within the framework of density functional perturbation theory. Our lattice dynamics simulation results showed that the pressure induced phase transition of K₈Si46 was believed to be driven by the phonon instability of the calthrate lattice. Analysis of the evolution of the partial phonon density of state with pressure, a legible dynamic picture for both guest K atoms and host lattice, was given. In addition, based on phonon calculations and combined with quasi-harmonic approximation, the specific heat of K₈Si46 was derived, which agreed very well with experimental results. Also, other important thermal properties including the thermal expansion coefficients and Grüneisen parameters of K₈Si46 under different temperature and pressure were also predicted.

Impact of rattlers on thermal conductivity of a thermoelectric clathrate: a first-principles study.

We investigate the role of rattling guest atoms on the lattice thermal conductivity of a type-I clathrate Ba_{8}Ga_{16}Ge_{30} by first-principles lattice dynamics. Comparing phonon properties of filled and empty clathrates, we show that rattlers cause tenfold reductions in the relaxation time of phonons by increasing the phonon-phonon scattering probability. Contrary to the resonant scattering...

Dynamical properties of guest ions in the type-I clathrate compounds X8Ga16Ge30 „X=Eu,Sr,Ba... investigated by Raman scattering

Raman active phonons in the type-I clathrate compounds of X8Ga16Ge30 X=Eu,Sr,Ba have been fully assigned by the combination of polarized Raman scattering and first principles calculations. The dynamical motions of guest ions in the 6d-site cage have been clearly identified. The energy of the modes, related to a rattling motion, decreases with decreasing temperature. The energy-decrease at low t...

Lattice dynamics and thermodynamics of bcc iron under pressure: First-principles linear response study

We compute the lattice-dynamical and thermal equation of state properties of ferromagnetic bcc iron using the first-principles linear response linear-muffin-tin-orbital method in the generalized-gradient approximation. The calculated phonon dispersion and phonon density of states, both at ambient and high pressures, show good agreement with inelastic neutron scattering data. We find the free en...

Thermal Properties and Transition Behavior of Host –guest Compounds under High Pressure

The thermal properties and transition behavior of the host-guest inclusion compounds: urea, thiourea, Dianin’s compound, clathrate hydrates and hydroquinone have been reviewed. In particular, we summarize their thermal conductivities, heat capacities and transitions at high pressures. Two of the systems: urea inclusion compounds and clathrate hydrates, show unusual glass-like thermal conductivi...

Predicting phonon properties and thermal conductivity from anharmonic lattice dynamics calculations and molecular dynamics simulations

Two methods for predicting phonon frequencies and relaxation times are presented. The first is based on quasiharmonic and anharmonic lattice dynamics calculations, and the second is based on a combination of quasiharmonic lattice dynamics calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. These phonon properties are then used with the Boltzmann transport equation under the relaxation-time approxi...
